Overview
A full Arctic week of deep snow, huskies, reindeer and a private visit to Santa in his cottage, with the whole family home in time for Christmas Day.
Äkäslompolo, the Village of Seven Fells, sits 200 km above the Arctic Circle, among the forests and frozen lakes of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Lapland Winter Magic settles here for six days in the week before Christmas, when the village is quiet, the snow is deep, and the season has begun to gather. Your home is a cabin of your own, with a fireplace and a sauna, and you stay put for the week rather than moving between hotels.
The days are spent outside: a husky safari through the forest, the adults sharing a team while the children ride with the guide; a reindeer farm, where you can feed the animals and take a sleigh ride through the trees; a snowmobile out to a frozen lake for a morning of ice fishing. A 50 Degrees North tour leader travels with the group throughout, alongside local guides, so the days run smoothly and the time between activities is yours, to browse the village, warm up at the café, or sit by the fire.
The heart of the week is Santa Day. In a secret forest clearing, well away from the crowds of Santa Claus Village, an old shaman marks your crossing of the Arctic Circle, there is gingerbread to bake and decorations to make, and each family is taken by sleigh, on their own, to Santa's cabin, where the visit is private and every child leaves with a gift.
Lapland Winter Magic offers the same trip as our Christmas-week tour, Lapland Christmas Magic, at a gentler pace and a lower price. It was built by people who know these winters and travel with their own children, with handpicked local suppliers. Together, the Magic tours won the 2024 Luxperience Award and the 2023 Luxury Travel Gold List in the Family Luxury Experience category.
